Saegis campus enhanced its academic, professional and managerial capacity with Professor Samson Ekanayake joining as the Deputy Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chancellor (designate) along with three other experienced senior executives as the Dean (Dr Suminda Ranasinghe), Associate Dean (Dr Gamini Padmaperuma) and Head of Corporate Affairs (Mr Anura Dissanayake).
Professor Samson Ekanayake is both an academic and a professional with a total of 42 years of experience in academia, accounting and finance professions, industry and in business. He has held the positions of lecturer at the Faculty of Management at Sri Jayewardenepura University, Finance and Administration Manager, CFO and Acting President of Mitsubishi Machinery Industries, Chief Accountant and Corporate Treasurer of The Finance Company and the Economist of the Fiji Sugar Corporation. He joined Deakin University, Australia in 1992 where he served for 24 years until the end of December 2015.
At Deakin University, he served as the Head of the Finance, Financial Planning and Insurance Disciplines. Professor Ekanayake is an international researcher, practitioner, consultant and teacher in finance, management accounting and enterprise risk management. His research into management control and trust, cultural control, management control system design, financial engineering, share buybacks and enterprise risk management has been published in reputed refereed international journals. He has presented papers in international finance conferences
at almost all prestigious accounting conferences in the world, including the annual conferences of American Accounting Association, European Accounting Association, and the Australia and New Zealand Accounting Association. The Corporate Finance and Business Finance text books he has co-authored and published by Wiley, and concept videos and other innovative study resources developed by him and published by DeakinAir are widely used in undergraduate and postgraduate business finance and corporate finance courses in USA, Australia and New Zealand. Over the years he has successfully developed several courses and programs in business finance, corporate finance, management accounting and enterprise risk management for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Professor Ekanayake has also held various academic, administrative and consultative positions at Deakin University and elsewhere. To mention a few, he was an elected member of the Governing Board of the Faculty of Business and Law, the University’s representative in the UniSuper Consultative Committee (assets under UniSuper management are worth over A$ 50 billion) and in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia, a member of the Academic Progress Committee, Academic Programs (course approval) committee, Teaching and Learning committee and the Vice-Chancellor’s Reference Panel. He has won many awards for excellence in teaching, innovate course development and for his dedicated service. Professor Ekanayake has served as a visiting professor at the Capital University of Economics in China, TMC Campus in Singapore and Disted-Stamford College in Malaysia. Over the years he has taught over 25,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students in Australia and closely mentored hundreds of students to reach top leadership positions in academia, finance profession, accounting profession and in industry and business. His recent article on the US$ 1.5 billion Bond issue by the Sri Lankan Government, published in the Sunday Times of 8th November, 2015 drew attention and praise from the finance professionals in several countries for its informational content, rigour and impartiality. Sri Lankan President’s Office also thanked him for his contribution to the debate with facts and impartial analysis. Internationally, in recognition of his achievements in his field and his contribution to the world society, his name was
entered in the World’s Who’s Who Directory and a citation about him was published in its 2012 issue.
Professor Ekanayake was a student of Richmond College, Galle and hails from a well-educated family in Sri Lanka. He is the youngest among eight siblings and six of whom graduated from universities and entered into professional careers, which was considered an accomplishment for any family during 1960s and 1970s. He is a grand nephew of Dr. G.B. Ekanayake, Cannon of Sri Lanka, a holder of a PhD from Oxford, who was appointed by the Government Ordinance No. 7 of 1930 to the first Governing Board of St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia with his contemporaries Hon. D. S. Senanayake and Hon. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike.
By way of academic qualifications, Professor Ekanayake holds a BSc (Special) Degree in Business Administration from Sri Jayewardenepura University, Post-Graduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Kent, England, a Master’s Degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lancaster, England and a D.Fin from University of Kent. He is a CPA of the Australian Institute of Certified Practising Accountants and a Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (FCA). He was also a member of Certified Management Accountants, American Accounting Association, Australia and New Zealand Accounting Association, Academy of International Business Studies and a senior member of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.
Professor Ekanayake’s addition to Saegis will not only strengthen its place as a private university but also help enhance the quality of higher education in Sri Lanka as he intends to apply his vast knowledge, skills and experience for the benefit of the students, professions, business and the entire community. He has come back to Sri Lanka with a clear vision and a mission for higher education in Sri Lanka.
